Ever since we moved here I’ve been wanting to visit Château de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley.  There are many chateaux throughout that area, so we decided to take a 3 day trip and visit several of them.  We stayed in Tours and drove to a few different nearby towns to see the chateaux.

Our first stop was in Amboise where we had lunch and then visited Clos Lucé, which was the home of Leonardo da Vinci before he died.  The home itself wasn’t very impressive compared to other chateaux we’ve seen, but it is well known for it’s grounds where there are machines that he invented on display.  We then spent a little time walking around Tours which turned out to be a bigger city than we expected.

The next day we started at Château de Chenonceau which was really beautiful and unique as it extended over the river.  This was my favorite just because of how unique the outside was.  There was a hedge maze on the grounds which was fun for Makenna to run around.  Then we headed to Château de Valençay which was really interesting too.  It has a really large property, so you can rent golf carts to drive through the different areas.  There was a playground, an area for goats and peacocks, an area in the woods where they would have outdoor parties, and an area where they built caves for storage.  There were some really beautiful rooms and a very impressive wine cave!  Next we stopped at Château de Chambord where we just visited the outside as we heard the inside was really big and there were a lot of stairs to climb (which we didn’t want to do with Makenna or my huge belly).  We saw some impressive photos of the outside but were a little disappointed to see they were doing construction that took away from the beauty.

Before heading home the next day, we went to Château de Villandry which was another favorite of ours as the inside was beautiful and it had amazing gardens outside.  There were several different gardens, all with different themes and purposes.  The landscaping was incredible.  There was also a grass tennis court and a hedge maze.

It was so neat to see the different chateaux and imagine that these were once homes to really wealthy families, and the history behind some of them is really interesting.  There is nothing quite like this in the US!

Soins des Pieds-A French Pedicure

I haven’t had a pedicure since we moved to France because I heard it isn’t the same spa-like experience like it is in the US.  But having a huge belly makes it impossible to give myself a pedicure, so I decided to make an appointment.

There aren’t really nail salons here like you see in the US, usually it’s done at a hair salon or spa.  The place I went to was a spa where they did facial treatments, massages etc.  I was taken into a room that felt like I was in a doctor’s office, with a table like an examination table at the doctor.  Of course, I was expecting a nice comfy massage chair with a foot bath.  I was told to lay down and the lady sat in front of my feet removing my nail polish, filing my nails and rubbing an exfoliating scrub on my feet.  Then she took out this little portable foot bath that plugs into the wall and has little jets.  She put this at the end of the table and I soaked my feet in there for a little while but it was uncomfortable having to lay with my knees up holding my feet down in the tub.  Then she painted my nails and was very precise so it took probably 45 minutes for her to put the different coats on and then fix a smudge after she put my sandals on.

Overall it was nice to get a pedicure and my nails looked nice, but it was definitely a different experience than in the US…and expensive!

Summer Vacation in the South of France

05 Tuesday Jul 2016

We had an amazing time on our vacation to the south of France.  Our first stop on our trip was in Aix-en-Provence where we started with lunch at a restaurant called Le Jardin D’Amalula.  We were shocked when they brought out a children’s place setting along with paper and crayons for Makenna.  Most restaurants in France are not kid-friendly at all and you’re lucky if they have a high chair, so Makenna was so excited.  The restaurant specialized in tartines (open-faced sandwiches) and I had one made with soft cheese, red fruit jam, dried figs, sun dried tomatoes and ham….it was so good!  While Ryan enjoyed the local Rosé, I was happy to order an unsweet iced tea since you can’t get that at most restaurants (usually they just have the Lipton flavored tea in a bottle).  After lunch we browsed the local market that was wrapping up and I got a straw beach tote, and the vendor gave Makenna a small tote.  We walked down Cours Mirabeau where there was a large market that morning, and there are several pretty fountains along the street.  Our last stop was at La Chocolaterie de Puyricard where we bought Calisson which is a traditional French candy that originated in this city.

Next we headed to Cassis which was one of our favorite cities we visited.  It was fairly small but so beautiful.  We walked around the picturesque port which was full of sailboats, small fishing boats, restaurants and cafes, and pretty buildings.  There is a tall cliff with a medieval chateau at the top called Chateau de Cassis.  We quickly visited the beach and then spent some time at the hotel pool.  The next morning we went to the local market and then took a 45 minute boat tour of 3 of the Calanques.  The water and views were so beautiful and unlike anything we’ve seen.  In one of the Calanques, the tour guide dropped some food into the water so we could see some tropical fish.

We then headed to Nice where we checked into our hotel along Promenades des Anglais, the long road/boardwalk along the water.  We went to Place Massena where there were a ton of splash fountains for kids to run and play in.  Makenna absolutely LOVED it, so we wound up going back there a few times during our stay.  Then we walked along Promenade du Paillon where there were many play areas in the center.  We also explored vieux Nice (the old part of the city) and tried the local dishes Socca (a crêpe made from chickpea flour) and Pissaladiere (a savory tart made with caramelized onions, garlic, olives and anchovies).

The next day we took a ride to Èze which is a beautiful small hilltop town on the coast.   It had beautiful views of the Mediterranean and was full of small cobblestone streets.  After having lunch there, we stopped in Monaco to see the famous casino.  We walked along the port and there was a horse jumping competition going on so we were able to see a lot of horses walking around and being prepped.  Ryan was excited to see the starting lines on the street for the famous F1 race that is held there.  We went back to Nice where we visited the Marché aux Fleurs and Colline de Chateau, a hilltop with amazing views of the coastline.  Makenna had ice cream every day of vacation and we had to stop at Fenocchio which is supposed to have the best ice cream in Nice.  The Euro 2016 soccer tournament was taking place during this time, and there was a fan zone set up for an upcoming game that was being held in Nice.  The fan zone was full that day of fans watching France play on a large screen.  Makenna had so much fun waving French flags and dancing.

Our next destination was Corsica, which we had to take a ferry to (and you could bring your car along).  We were shocked that all you had to do was pull up to the port and they checked that you had a ticket to get on the boat and then you drove on to the boat.  They didn’t check IDs or look to see what you had in your car.  Once you parked your car there wasn’t anyone around to tell you where to go, so you just had to figure out where your cabin was and then there was someone in the hallway to let you into your room.  There were no safety drills like you have to do on a cruise ship.  The cabin and the ship were fairly nice compared to what our expectations were.  There was a small pool for the day trips (some of the trips go during the day while some are overnight and we did the overnight trip).  They had a restaurant and a children’s play area and gift shop, as well as an outdoor bar/cafe.

We arrived in Porto Vecchio, Corsica at 7am and headed to the town of Bonifacio.  It is a hilltop village with a nice marina (where we saw a very big, very expensive yacht).  We rode a small train up to the village because 1. there was no way I was walking all the way up there and 2. Makenna had been wanting to ride the small train that we’ve seen in every city.  Of course there were amazing views of the Mediterranean as well as some cute shops and restaurants.  Then we headed back to Porto Vecchio where we had lunch at the port and went to the Santa Guillia beach.  Our jaws dropped at how beautiful it was….the water was so clear with pretty shades of blue and turquoise, and the sand barely had any rocks or shells so you could easily walk on the beach and in the water without stepping on anything.  We then checked into our villa which overlooked the beach and had an outdoor patio where Ryan grilled our dinner.

The next day we spent enjoying the beach.  Makenna really loved the water and building sand castles.  She didn’t want to leave!  Later in the day we went to the pool at the resort and then grilled dinner on the patio again.  For dessert we had Fiadone which is a Corsican cheesecake made with local cheese and lemon zest.

Our last day in Corsica we spent some time walking around the town of Porto Vecchio and then driving around part of the island.  We then got back on the ferry and headed back to the mainland.

We made a quick stop in L’Isle Sur La Sorgue, which is a cute little town with canals and water wheels.  After exploring a little and checking out the local morning market, we drove to Avignon.  We walked around a little and saw Palais des Papes (the Pope’s Palace), where 7 popes have lived dating back to the 14th century, and then took Makenna to a playground.  We had lunch along the Rhône river with a view of Pont d’Avignon.  We did a little shopping (I had to get some lavender honey and lavender oil while in Provence!) and we walked on Pont d’Avignon.  Then we headed to a beautiful bed and breakfast about 15 minutes outside of the city and swam in the pool for a little while. The cicadas, which are a symbol of the summer in Provence, were quite noisy!  We actually saw many shops selling wooden cicadas that made noise when you walk past them and we thought someone would be crazy to buy something that made that noise!

The next day was our last day of our vacation and we stopped in the town of Gordes before driving home.  It’s another beautiful hilltop village with winding, narrow streets.  This was a must-see in Provence because it is known for lavender fields, with a picturesque view at Sénanque Abbey.  The lavender was not in full bloom yet but we were able to take some nice pictures of the abbey and lavender.

We really loved each place we visited, we saw some beautiful sights and we really enjoyed our time at the beach and exploring small French towns.  It was one of our favorite vacations!

End of Year IWC Activities

This past year I have been serving as the President of the IWC (International Women’s Club) and it has been a great experience.  Being that our little boy will be arriving in September, I have decided to step down from my role because I know I will have my hands full!  We had a few fun events before the summer break, including a private after-hours evening at Sephora, a family picnic and a catered farewell dinner.

The night at Sephora was really nice and the best part was it was free!  A few store employees kept the store open just for us and created several different “stations” to demonstrate products and techniques such as nail art, summer makeup and a new Korean skin care line.  I especially liked the skin care station because the lady gave me a hand massage with a hand lotion she was demonstrating for us 🙂  Of course we all wound up buying some new things and we were given gift bags at the end of the night.

Our family picnic was held at Parc Montjuzet which is on a hill overlooking the city.  It has beautiful views and has many different playgrounds throughout the park.  Everyone brought food to share which was fun because our members are from all over the world and we were able to try dishes that are traditional in other countries.

The farewell dinner was catered and included an international menu of tapas and finger foods.  Everything was really good!  We also had a “photo booth” station with fun props (there is a photo above of me with some of the other committee members).

I really enjoyed working with the other ladies on the committee and have treasured getting to know women from other countries and cultures.  I will continue to help the committee when I can, and of course I will be looking forward to participating in the club events/activities when I can!

Baby Shipment

One of the perks of having a baby while in France is Michelin pays for us to have a shipment sent over from the US.  We could ship anything (even non-baby stuff) except food and liquids up to 230 lbs.  Of course I had to do some online shopping and the grandparents had to buy some things for both the baby and Makenna.  We stocked up on Costco diapers because diapers here are so expensive (like twice the cost of what we paid in the US!)  I also (with the help of Mom and Dad P) shopped Craigslist for a baby swing and a double stroller.  Mom and Dad P stored everything for us until the movers came, and then the moving company boxed everything up and shipped it over to us.  It was like a mini baby shower/Christmas for me!

Bol & Bagel Cereal Bar

Recently a cereal bar opened called Bol & Bagel and I think this might be one of the most genius ideas I’ve seen.  They import cereals from different countries and they have many American cereals that you can’t buy at the store here.  Their menu consists of different “cocktails” which includes 3-4 types of cereal plus add-ons such as ice cream, nuts, fruit, and candy.  They serve it with a straw so you can drink the milk at the end. You can also order bagel sandwiches (bagels are also hard to find here, and you don’t really see bagel sandwiches anywhere).  Another cute concept is they have a box of little plastic toys that they let children choose from, to mimic how cereal boxes used to include a fun prize inside.

The seating is made to look like beds which was also really neat.  They also advertise “breakfast dating” where you can order a meal for 2 in the morning.  I really loved the concept and uniqueness of the restaurant…and these cereal cocktails are a pregnant girl’s (or maybe just my sweet tooth’s) dream!  The owner is English so I talked to him for awhile and tried to convince him he needs to deliver to the hospital after I give birth 😉  Until then, we’ll have to make a few more trips for my cereal fix!

Lunch at Le Bus 26

One of the ladies of the IWC (International Women’s Club) planned a lunch at Le Bus 26.  It  is a double decker bus that was transformed into a mobile restaurant, with the kitchen being downstairs and the seating upstairs.  The food is very gourmet and unique (made with seasonal ingredients), and the restaurant is often booked completely several months out due to its’ popularity!  The bus will park at a specific area for 2-3 months, often a place with a beautiful view and they serve both lunch and dinner.

The seating was really nice, with wooden holders down the center of the table to hold glasses of wine and flowers and very comfortable benches.  The food was really delicious, and the presentation was nice as well!

There were 2 menus to choose from.  The menu I chose included a mise en bouche, a starter of shrimp with coconut lemongrass sauce and artichokes, a main dish of cod with pureed potato and passion fruit mousse, a “palate cleanser” of lemon sorbet, ending with a dessert of dark chocolate ice cream with red fruit.

It was one of the best meals I’ve had here so I might just have to make a reservation again when Ryan can join me 🙂

Makenna and I participated in La Clermontoise for the second year in a row.  It is a 5k breast cancer fundraiser and the race route goes through the center of Clermont Ferrand.  This year it was a little chilly and we had a few drops of rain towards the end, but we still enjoyed it!  There were almost 20,000 participants, and Makenna loved that at several spots along the route were different bands playing music.  Ryan is always out of town for work at this time of year, so next year I’ll have to do the race with both of my babies!

5 Pawlowskis in Paris

Ryan’s brother Jon and sister-in-law Janet were recently in Paris so we went to visit them for the weekend.  This was our first trip to Paris since we’ve moved here!  It is about 4 hours away and we decided to take the train.  Our seats were in the “kid car” where there was a play area for kids, so it was great that Makenna could play and run around rather than be stuck in a seat for 4 hours.  Unfortunately, halfway through the trip we had to stop because there was a storm the night before and a tree knocked down some of the power lines.  We were stopped for about 3 hours and then had to get on another train for the rest of the trip.

We didn’t wind up getting into Paris until after 5, so after we dropped off our bags at our hotel we went to a cafe to meet up with Jon and Janet for a little while before their dinner reservation.  This was Makenna’s first time meeting her Aunt Janet and her second time seeing her Uncle Jon since she was born, so it was great to see them!

Jon and Janet headed to dinner and Ryan and I headed back towards the hotel to find a place to eat.  We were tired from a long day of traveling and Makenna fell asleep on our walk (which was so nice because Ryan and I were able to enjoy a some peaceful time to ourselves for a little while!).

The next day Makenna made sure we were up nice and early, so we headed to Starbucks for breakfast (the hotel breakfast was the typical French meal of only coffee and croissants) and then walked to the Louvre to see how an artist covered the pyramid to make it blend in with the palace behind it.  It was really neat to see!  Then we walked around the gardens for awhile and admired some baby ducks that were huddled around a fountain.  We then crossed a nearby bridge that people have started putting “love locks” on after the locks on the infamous “love lock bridge” were taken down.  Jon, Janet and their friend Frank met up with us and we browsed a farmers market and then headed to lunch.  After lunch we walked around for awhile and visited 3 different macaron shops including Angelina and Ladurée.  Then we stopped for a drink at an American bar, Harry’s New York Bar, which was fun because they had flags from many different US universities including Virginia Tech and Clemson!  I was so excited they had ginger beer, which is the “mocktail” I had when I was pregnant with Makenna.  We were supposed to go to dinner, but Makenna had a long day and didn’t nap, so by 7pm she had enough.  Instead we headed back to the hotel and ate gyros in our hotel room while Makenna played with her magnetic fishing game.

On our last day we decided we would do something fun for Makenna before we headed home since she had a long day of walking around with us the day before.  Our plan was to first get breakfast at an American-style diner, but of course they were closed so we had breakfast at Starbucks again.  It was pouring rain but we bit the bullet and made our way to the aquarium.  Makenna loved seeing the fish but when we got to the tank where you could touch the fish she was scared (to this day she will still randomly say “Kenna touch the fish jamais!” (jamais means never in French).  The aquarium is located across from the Eiffel Tower, so Makenna got to see the famous landmark for the first time.  We then had to catch our train back to Clermont.  It was a nice weekend but we were exhausted and ready to be home!

Makenna’s First Haircut

Today we took Makenna to our hairdresser for her first haircut!  She really doesn’t have much hair to cut, but we are hoping it might help her hair start growing faster.  She had a few spots that were longer than others, so the hairdresser (Ludivine) just cut a little to even it up.  Makenna was scared at first (and it wasn’t a salon catered to kids so I’m sure it was intimidating) and she didn’t want to sit in the chair, so Ryan put her on his shoulders and she was happy.  The hairdresser gave her a brush to play with, which was a great distraction, and she was finally able to cut Makenna’s hair.  Afterwards, Ludivine offered her a bon bon (what the French call candy) and suddenly the “coiffure” was the place to be!

Makenna still talks about getting her hair cut and every time we walk by the salon she says “coiffure”!  I think the next time around will be easier….if she ever grows enough hair to need another hair cut!
